The Holy Face of Jesus Revealed in the Eucharist

In the quiet village of Vilakkannur, Kerala, India, an extraordinary Eucharistic event has touched the lives of countless faithful and drawn attention far beyond the local community.

At Christ the King Church, a consecrated Host became the focus of an extraordinary phenomenon: an image resembling the Holy Face of Jesus appeared on the Eucharistic Host during Holy Mass. After years of theological and scientific examination, the event received recognition from the Catholic Church in 2025. The public proclamation took place on May 31, 2025, when Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, formally announced the recognition at Christ the King Church in Vilakkannur. For the faithful, Vilakkannur has become a powerful reminder of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist and of the Catholic faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ.

The Event of 2013

The extraordinary event took place on November 15, 2013, during a morning Holy Mass at Christ the King Church, Vilakkannur. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Thomas Pathickal, who was serving as parish priest at the time. During the celebration of the Eucharist, Fr. Thomas noticed an unusual mark appearing on the consecrated Host. According to his testimony, the mark gradually became more distinct and appeared to take the form of a human face. The priest showed the Host to others, including the sacristan, who also reported seeing the image. News of the extraordinary event spread rapidly. Large numbers of people came to Vilakkannur to see the Host and pray before it. What had begun during an ordinary morning Mass soon became an event of profound importance for the local Catholic community. Yet the Church did not simply accept the phenomenon without examination. A careful process of investigation followed.

Years of Investigation

Following the event, the Host was taken from the parish and placed under ecclesiastical supervision for observation and safekeeping by the Archdiocese of Tellicherry. It remained preserved for several years. In September 2018, the Host was returned to Vilakkannur for public veneration. This return, however, was not itself a formal declaration that the phenomenon had been established as a miracle. The investigation continued. The Syro-Malabar Church's theological commission examined the event, while scientific investigations were also pursued.

The Host was subsequently taken to Rome in connection with the continuing investigation. Scientific examinations reported in connection with the case included advanced analytical techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and mass spectrometry. According to the findings reported by the Church, the material present in the image was consistent with the material of the Host itself, and no external substance was found to have influenced the formation of the image. These findings are significant. At the same time, it is important to understand the distinction between scientific analysis and theological discernment. Scientific examination can investigate the physical characteristics and composition of the Host. Whether an event should be understood as a Eucharistic miracle is ultimately a matter of ecclesiastical and theological judgment.

The Church's Recognition

After years of investigation, the case reached the Holy See. On March 19, 2025, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith communicated, through the Apostolic Nunciature, that there was no objection to recognizing the Eucharistic phenomenon at Vilakkannur as an extraordinary event. The recognition was subsequently communicated to the faithful by the Archdiocese of Tellicherry. Then, on May 31, 2025, a solemn Eucharistic celebration was held at Christ the King Church, Vilakkannur. In the presence of bishops, priests, religious and thousands of faithful, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, made the official proclamation of the recognition. The proclamation marked a historic moment for the Catholic Church in India and for the faithful who had accompanied the event through more than a decade of prayer, investigation and discernment.

A Sign Pointing to Christ

The significance of Vilakkannur is not simply the extraordinary image observed on the Host. For Catholics, the Eucharist is already the greatest mystery of faith: Jesus Christ is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament — Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. A Eucharistic phenomenon does not create that reality. Rather, it can serve as a sign that directs the faithful more deeply toward the mystery that the Church celebrates at every Holy Mass. The Church's recognition of the Vilakkannur event therefore invites the faithful not merely to look at an extraordinary image, but to look beyond the image to Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist.

It is an invitation to adoration.

An invitation to prayer.

An invitation to conversion.

An invitation to deeper faith.

A Place of Prayer and Pilgrimage

Following the recognition of the Eucharistic event, Christ the King Church, Vilakkannur, has become an important destination for those wishing to pray before the Eucharistic Host and deepen their devotion to Christ. The Host associated with the event is now presented for the veneration of the faithful in a specially prepared setting. Pilgrims come to Vilakkannur not simply to see an extraordinary phenomenon, but to spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, to seek God's mercy, to offer their intentions and to renew their faith in the Eucharistic Lord. For many, the journey to Vilakkannur is therefore more than a pilgrimage to a place associated with an extraordinary event. It is a journey toward Jesus.

The Holy Face of Jesus

The image associated with the Vilakkannur Eucharistic event has been perceived by witnesses and faithful as the Holy Face of Jesus. For believers, this Face has become a powerful reminder of Christ's presence, His sacrifice and His boundless love. From a small village in the green hills of Kerala, a message of faith has reached people around the world:

Look to Christ.
Adore Christ.
Trust in Christ.
Remain close to Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

The story of Vilakkannur is ultimately not about an image alone. It is about the One whom the image points toward.

Jesus Christ — truly present in the Holy Eucharist.
